On 29–30 September 2025, the Laboratory of Science, Technology and Innovation in Society (STIS) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens under professor Stathis Arapostathis, hosted the international workshop “Governing Just Agrifood Transitions: Politics of Justice, Responsibility and Resilience in Sustainable Food Transitions.” This high-level event brought together scholars from across Europe and beyond to explore the ethical, political, and material dimensions of technoscientific change in the agrifood sector.
The workshop was supported by the EurSafe project as its official interim event and supported by the HFRI-funded Go-JuST project, in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Sociology (AGRERI) as well as the CODECS project.
CODECS Contributions
CODECS was proud to support this event and contribute to its rich interdisciplinary dialogue. Three CODECS-affiliated researchers presented papers that addressed key challenges in agrifood governance:
- Gianluca Brunori (University of Pisa), the CODECS coordinator presented “Science-policy interfaces in sustainability transitions,” provided an assessment into how scientific knowledge can better inform policy-making in complex food system transformations.
- Constantine Iliopoulos (AGRERI), together with colleagues, presented “Who owns, who controls, who benefits? Costs and benefits of farm digitalization,” examining the implications of digital technologies in agriculture and the distribution of power and value among stakeholders.
- Serafin Pazos-Vidal (European Association for Innovation in Local Development, AEIDL), co-authored with Blanca Casares Guillén and Marilena Gemtou, presented “Governing just agrifood transitions: integrating fairness into EU policy-making,” highlighting the need for fairness and inclusivity in European agrifood transition policies.
A Platform for Global Dialogue
The workshop featured 15 invited papers from scholars representing 10 international universities and research organizations, covering cases from three continents. Keynote speakers included Teea Kortetmäki (University of Jyväskylä) and Andy Stirling (SPRU, University of Sussex), who addressed foundational questions on justice and transformation in food systems.
CODECS’ active participation in this event underscores its commitment to fostering inclusive, evidence-based, and just transitions in agrifood systems across Europe.
