The CODECS project continues to advance the digital transformation of European agriculture with the latest updates to its Digital Platform, presented in the newly released report on ‘platform and integrated components’. The platform is designed to connect data, technologies, and knowledge from across the EU. Developed and managed by the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), the platform brings together research outputs and digital tools that support smarter, more sustainable farming practices.

CODECS Digital Platform integrates multiple components, making it a one-stop resource for researchers, farmers, advisors, and policymakers. It showcases the technologies tested in the CODECS Living Labs, hosts data and analysis tools, and demonstrates the real-world impact of digital innovation in agriculture.

Integrating Knowledge from Living Labs

A key milestone in the recent platform update has been the integration of digital technologies from 18 CODECS Living Labs into the platform’s meta-inventory. These Living Labs are testing diverse solutions such as, IoT-based irrigation systems, AI-powered crop monitoring, and precision livestock management technologies.

By consolidating these examples, the platform provides users with an  evolving picture of how digital tools are transforming agricultural practices across Europe.

In addition to showcasing digital technologies, the platform will soon feature datasets generated within the CODECS project, ensuring transparency and traceability of research outputs. These datasets will offer  a valuable open resource for further analysis, enabling stakeholders to explore the tangible impacts of digitalisation in agriculture.

Storybooks and Virtual Tours: Learning Through Experience

To make research outcomes more engaging and accessible, the platform now hosts a growing collection of interactive Storybooks and Virtual Tours.

  • Storybooks present real-life Living Lab experiences in a dynamic, multimedia format that combines text, images, and video.
  • Virtual Tours offer immersive, 360° explorations of  demonstration farms across Europe, currently featuring Scotland’s Elchies Farm with upcoming tours from Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and Estonia.

These tools allow users to explore innovations directly from their screens and experience how digital technologies empower the future of sustainable agriculture.

Tools for Assessing Sustainability

A major highlight of the platform is the Digital Technology Impact Assessment Toolkit, which brings together several analytical tools developed by CODECS partner, including:

  • Environmental Footprint Calculator: visualise life cycle impacts and allows users to test scenarios.
  • The Economic Cost Calculator: supports cost-benefit analysis of digital adoption.
  • Technology Assessment Tool and Multi-Criteria Assessment Tool: evaluate sustainability from technical, economic, and social perspectives.

The full integration of these calculators will be published in the coming year, with the Environmental Footprint Calculator already fully integrated. Together, these tools provide users with a comprehensive framework for evaluating the impacts and performance of different digital solutions, supporting more informed decision-making about technology implementation in agriculture, fostering greater understanding of their potential benefits.

Coming Up next

Between 2025 and 2026, the CODECS datasets, storybooks, virtual tours, and assessment toolkit are expected to be fully integrated and accessible through the Digital Platform. This enrichment with project-generated content will further strengthen the platform’s role as a central hub for sharing, exploring, and applying knowledge on digital innovations in European agriculture.
