On 10th May 2024, the Agricultural Cooperative Agraria’s venue in Koper, Slovenia, became the epicenter of innovation in agriculture, hosting a groundbreaking event focused on Digital Technology in Agriculture. This event was organised as part of the CODECS project, hosted by the Living Lab Smart Villages Network from Slovenia.
The Smart Villages Network: Cultivating Sustainable Futures
The Smart Villages Network connects farmers, researchers, technology solution providers, and government representatives, engaging in various projects and initiatives that complement and enrich each other, with a focus on cultivating a smarter and more sustainable future for rural communities. It participates in co-creation of sustainable solutions, leveraging the benefits of technological advancements with a primary focus on harnessing IoT (Internet of Things) technology in wine and honey production through co-creation, prototyping, testing, and scaling up innovations.
The event featured the implementation of cutting-edge technology, focusing on IoT and LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network). These technologies were showcased on a large group of participants, demonstrating how these advancements are revolutionising traditional farming methods. The technology is in use in one of the pilot regions in Slovenia, the Doppler Winery. The event highlighted how IoT and LoRaWAN can help farmers monitor crops, and optimise resources for more sustainable and efficient farming practices.
One of the most significant aspects of the event was the large and diverse gathering. It attracted representatives from 50 farms across the Slovenian Littoral region, along with agricultural advisors, researchers, technology providers, students. This diverse mix of attendees fostered a collaborative environment, encouraging the exchange of ideas and promoting a deeper understanding of how digital technologies can be applied to improve agricultural outcomes.
Discussions and Case Studies: Benefits of IoT and LoRaWAN
The discussions throughout the day revolved around the potential benefits of IoT and LoRaWAN in agriculture, emphasising how these technologies can streamline operations, reduce costs, and increase crop yields. Case studies and examples from the Doppler Winery illustrated the tangible impacts of adopting technology, including real-time data monitoring, improved resource management, and more informed decision-making.
A Successful Step Towards Sustainable Farming
The event’s success underlined the importance of embracing innovation in agriculture. It provided an opportunity for farmers, advisors, and industry experts to connect, share knowledge, and explore new opportunities for growth. The positive feedback and enthusiasm from the attendees reflected a collective commitment to advancing sustainable farming practices and ensuring a vibrant future for agriculture in the region.
This event demonstrated that through collaboration and a shared vision, the agricultural community can continue to evolve, creating more efficient, sustainable, and profitable farming practices that benefit both farmers and the environment.
