The CODECS project contributed to the conversation on regional digital transformation at the Regional Studies Association (RSA) Annual Conference 2025, held from 6 to 9 May at the University of Porto, Portugal. During the session themed “Digitalisation, AI, and its Implications,” CODECS researchers presented findings on how the adoption of digital technologies in agriculture is shaped by regional disparities across Europe.
Understanding Regional Perspectives
The presentation, titled “The Perception of Costs and Benefits of Farm Digitalisation in Europe,” explored how different stakeholders assess the impact of technologies like precision farming and data-driven systems. The team found that while many recognise the potential of digital tools to increase productivity and sustainability, their adoption is uneven and shaped by regional realities.
The study drew on insights from 18 Living Labs across Europe, which serve as collaborative environments where farmers, advisors, and policymakers co-develop practical innovations in digital agriculture.
Highlighting the Barriers
The research identified a range of obstacles that continue to slow down digital uptake in agriculture. These include high initial costs, limited access to digital infrastructure, lack of technical training, and concerns about data security and trust in technology providers. Importantly, these challenges are not uniform, they vary significantly between regions, reflecting deeper structural inequalities.
A Call for Tailored Strategies
Despite these challenges, participants in the Living Labs expressed optimism about the potential of digitalisation, specially when accompanied by supportive, regionally adapted policies. They emphasised the importance of co-designing digital tools with local actors to ensure relevance, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.
