A new report on the Analysis of Digital Ecosystems sheds light on the factors that enable and hinder the development of robust digital ecosystems in agriculture. The report, led by the University of Almeria as part of the CODECS project, examines data from the 19 Living Labs to identify key resources, capabilities, collaborations, and innovations driving successful digitalisation.
Opportunities and challenges in digitalisation
The interim findings reveal resource challenges, such as unreliable internet infrastructure, limited funding for climate and digital risks, non-standardised data systems, and inefficient knowledge sharing mechanisms. These resource constraints can stifle innovation and limit the adoption of digital technologies.
The report also highlights governance barriers. Emerging governance dynamics related to digitalisation, insufficient coordination between different levels of government, overly strict regulations, and unclear data rights pose significant challenges. Addressing these governance issues is crucial to creating a more conducive environment for digital transformation.
Additionally, it also presents issues related to actor system dynamics. An aging farming population with limited digital skills, imbalanced participation among stakeholders, and difficulties in realising the benefits of collective action also present hurdles. Bridging the digital skills gap and fostering greater collaboration are essential for successful digitalisation efforts.
The report emphasises the need for:
- Tailored technological solutions that address the specific needs of farmers and agricultural businesses.
- Investment in training and skills development to empower farmers and other stakeholders to effectively utilise digital tools.
- Collaborative frameworks that promote knowledge sharing and facilitate the scaling of successful digitalisation initiatives.
These findings will be further explored during CODECS Knowledge Accelerator webinar on February 6th, 2025, where experts and stakeholders will gather to discuss the report’s implications and chart a path forward for digital transformation in agriculture. The CODECS project aims to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector by fostering the development of thriving digital ecosystems.
The final report, incorporating further analysis and insights, is expected to be released in September 2025.
