On-farm demonstrations play a pivotal role in CODECS project to demonstrate the effectiveness of digital solutions in real conditions to a wide range of stakeholders, but also to capture feedback from end-users on the relevance of these solutions in their context. The 21 Living Labs from CODECS consortium will organise 40 on-farm demonstrations (including international cross-visits) and 20 virtual demonstrations all over Europe during the lifetime of the project.

The first international cross-visit has been organised in Spain by the COEXPHAL-UAL Chair during the CODECS annual General Assembly, held from 12-14 December 2023 at the University of Almeria. CODECS annual General Assembly held  12 and 14 December 2023, at the University of Almeria. It gathered 60 researchers and agricultural engineers belonging to 33 institutions from 20 European countries.  This event provided valuable peer-to-peer learning among consortium partners to enhance the integration of digital technologies into agricultural production.

During this international demonstration event, CODECS partners evaluated the perception of the social, economic, and environmental costs and benefits of adopting technologies that had been showcased during the visit. The demonstrated technology is about a platform for data integration and interoperability, to use the information as a decision support system for both technicians and growers. It was proposed to showcase the technologies and the software architecture that allow the interoperability and integration of data from solar panels, water panels (desalination and reverse osmosis) and other digital solutions.

In addition, CODECS partners shared insights about technological maturity and local farmers’ readiness for digital technologies adoption. Cynthia Giagnocavo, the director of COEXPHAL-UAL Chair in Horticulture, Cooperative Studies and Sustainable Development has assessed that participation in these European projects is necessary not only for the Almeria agricultural sector, investigating important aspects of sustainability, but also to demonstrate progress in sustainability to European research and agricultural centers.”

A second demonstration event took place on 13 March 2024, organised in France by OccitANum, in collaboration with the French Livestock Technical Institute (IDELE), French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE). During this demonstration event, breeders, advisors and technicians exchanged knowledge about using digital technologies in the French context. The participants visited the dairy sheep experimental farm La Cazotte in Aveyron which implements individual milk meters and high frequency sensors to assess animal behavior and improve welfare management in sheep.

The CODECS project  supports digitalisation for European farmers during the lifecycle of the project and beyond, providing an online platform that hosts demonstration guidelines and spread knowledge about sustainable farm digitalisation.
